Quoting Andreas Mohr:

The acx100 project was started by about 5 people examining the various acx100 binary Linux driver "releases" for distro kernels around 2.4.18 etc.

Kernel inclusion

The ACX Plain driver (and subsequently the SoftMac version) was very close to be included in the 2.6.18 kernel. However, issues were raised on 'clean room' practices not having been followed in the initial development of the driver, which could bring legal trouble onto the kernel.

There was much discussion on this matter. However, in the end no one seemed to clarify whether this 'clean room' procedure was really a requirement for kernel inclusion nor which the guidelines for this procedure were. The last replies from the ACX developers Andreas Mohr and Denis Vlasenko did not receive an answer and the ACX driver was dropped from kernel inclusion.

It seems that the goal should be now to at least get the Mac80211 port included in the (non-mainline) wireles-dev kernel tree.

In any case, it has been added to the list of potential wireless drivers to be included in the kernel from the Linux Driver Project site.
